Progress report on Sagar-Runi murder probe submitted

The High Court yesterday rejected the bail petitions of three suspects after RAB submitted progress report on the investigation of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi murder case.

The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order saying that they would not disclose the report details as the matter was at investigation stage.

Investigation Officer Zafar Ullah, an assistant superintendent of police who placed the report, hoped that the inquiry might be concluded within six months.

Supreme Court lawyer Masud Hossain Dolon pleaded for the petitioners while Assistant Attorney general Gazi Mamunur Rashid represented the state yesterday.

The hearing on the progress as well as the bail pleas petitions did not take place on Sunday as the case file did not reach the High Court in proper time.

On February 18, the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Mohammad Ullah ordered the investigating officer to appear before it yesterday and brief them about recent developments.

Sagar and Runi were found dead at their rented house in the capital’s West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012.
