Transparency International Bangladesh has urged Finance Minister AMA Muhith to disclose the amount of money he has reportedly been collecting from the business community in connection with the upcoming T-20 World Cup.
In a press release yesterday, TIB criticised news of the finance minister seeking Tk100 crore from business houses to carry out beautification works in Dhaka ahead of the international cricket tournament, which starts on Sunday.
Muhith also sought contributions for holding of a record-making event with thousands of people singing the country’s national anthem together on March 26.
Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB, termed the minister’s demand as “an alarming example of moral degradation of politics and ruling system of the country”.
“The finance minister collects ‘extortion money’ often,” Iftekharuzzaman said, quoting news reports on Muhith.
