Defamation case against Bashundhara Group boss

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and four others have been sued for defamation in Natore.

Mahfuz Alam Moony, son of late Shamsul Islam and also district correspondent of the daily Jugantor, has filed the case claiming Tk10 crore as compensation of defamation with Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Natore on Wednesday.

The other accused are the daily Kalerkantha editor Imdadul Haq Milon, the daily Bangladesh Protidin editor Noim Nizam, its district correspondent Nasim Uddin, son of late Mostafa Kamal of Borgachha station area in the city and district correspondent of the daily Kalerkantha Rezaul Karim Reza.

In the case statement, Moony claimed, Bashundhara group chairman was making a conspiracy against the applicants, daily Jugantor and Jamuna distillery from long along with the other criminals.

As part of the plot, the criminals published a news on the last page of the daily Kalerkantha on February 25 last where it said that Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul, Jugantor's acting editor Saiful Islam and publisher Salma Islam ordered Jugantor's district correspondent Mahfuz Alam Moony to make false news against journalist Nasim Uddin (Bangladesh Protidin) and Moony sent the news.

Mahfuz Alam Moony felt dishonored which valued Tk10 crore. Bangladesh Protidin in its report published on the same date said that it is every Muslims' responsibilities to raise a protest against supplied prohibited (Haram) liquids in the market. It is allegedly the anti act of information technology. The news also said 600 people died in 10 districts after drinking Jamuna distillery produced wine which incurred loss Jamuna group in socially and economically.

The applicants urged the court to grant the prayer, also take action against the criminals following the act 500/501/114 and the law of information technology.

The applicant's prosecutor advocate Abdul Mannan Sarker said magistrate Liaqat Ali directed Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Aslam Uddin to submit report after investigating the matter.
