34 Bangladeshis detained in Malaysia

Malaysian police yesterday detained 77 foreign workers including 34 Bangladeshi nationals from a hotel project site in the country’s Jalan Teluk Kumbar area over a clash between two Indonesians and a Bangladeshi on Tuesday.

Malaysian English daily (online) "The Star" reports, a Bangladeshi clashed with two Indonesians leaving each other critically injured. Later, the three foreign nationals were sent to Penang Hospital.

Lai Fah Hin said they had detained 28 Indonesians, including a woman, 34 Bangladeshi and 15 Myanmar nationals.

Malaysia is one of the labour recipient countries for Bangladesh. According to officials at Bangladeshi High Commission in Malaysia, around 4,00,000 Bangladeshis are working in the country.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian authorities are conducting drives to nab illegal foreigners and to send them back.

A total of 331 Bangladeshis have been arrested since the crackdown starting since January 20.
