Man to die for killing wife

A Chittagong court issued the death penalty to a man who killed his wife for dowry.

Women and Children Repression Tribunal-1 Judge Md Rezaul Karim pronounced the verdict yesterday.

The convict was identified as Abdul Hannan, 25, hailing from Jafrabad village of Chandnaish upazila of Chittagong while another accused Rabeya Khatun, mother of Hannan, was acquitted from the case.

On April 19, 2001, Hannan strangulated his wife Nargis Akter for dowry of TK50,000. Nargis was five months pregnant at the time.

Her body was found lying in a cane field the following day. Akter’s father Dudu Miah filed a case with Chandnaish police station later on the same day. On July 25, 2001, police submitted the charge sheet and it was framed on January 31, 2002.

Out of 19, a total of eight persons testified in the case. Hannan has been absconding since August of last year.

Hannan and Nargis, both hailing from Charpara village under Jafarabad union of Chnadnaish, were married in 2000.
