Petition filed for cancelling bails of accused

The tribunal dealing with Jahangirnagar University student Zubair Ahmed murder case would give order on the appeal for cancelling bails of six accused Chhatra League activists on Sunday.

Public Prosecutor SM Rafiqul Islam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 submitted the application yesterday.

The move came after a general diary was lodged by a student of Jahangirnagar University on January 19 with Kotwali police against six of the accused who had attacked and gave death threats to Syed Nazmul Hossain and Rajibul Islam – friends of Zubair outside the Judge’s Court the same day.

The accused threatened them in presence of Estate Officer of the university Azim Uddin, a former Chhatra League leader of the unit. l

The two students are batch mates of Zubair, who was brutally beaten and hacked on January 8, 2012 on the campus. He died the following day. They have been involved with “Shontrasher Biruddhe Jahangirnagar” – a platform carrying out demonstrations to end violence on campus, since the killing.

Meanwhile, the court adjourned the proceedings until January 29 as the prosecution failed to produce the seventh witness in the case yesterday.

Outside the premises, around 30 activists of the platform formed a human chain for an hour at noon demanding cancellation of bails of the all the accused as they have been threatening the activists demanding justice for Zubair.

All the 13 accused, who are leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League – ruling Awami League’s student wing, are now on bail.
