AL leader’s murder sparks protests in Khagrachhari

Murder of Awami League leader Nobo Ranjan Tripura in Khagrachhari has triggered protests at different spots across the hill district.

Leaders of Bangladesh Tripura Kalyan Sangsad (BTKS) formed a human chain in the Shapla Chattar area of the town in the afternoon yesterday.

The BTKS leaders hold United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF), a regional organisation, responsible for killing Nobo Ranjan Tripura and urged the administration to take action against the killers.

They announced to retaliate if any BTKS leaders were further attacked by the “criminals of UPDF.”

Following the human chain, a meeting was held at the same spot with BTKS Advisor and former Khagrachhari Hill District Council Chairman Monindra Lal Tripura in the chair.

Awami League Khagrachhari district unit brought out a rally around 3pm led by its Joint Secretary SM Shafi who also the asked administration to arrest the killers of Tripura.

Panchhari upazila Awami League unit also brought out a rally in Panchhari Bazar around 4.30pm towards the upazila headquarters led by its President Md Bahar Mia.

Senior Vice President of Logung union parishad unit of Awami Legue Naba Ranjan Tripura, 42, was gunned down by unidentified miscreants at Karbaripara under Panchhari upazila in Khagrachhari district on Wednesday.

A gang of 10-15 miscreants, equipped with firearms, attacked him after entering his Karbaripara village home under Logang union around 9pm, leaving him dead on the spot, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Khagrachhari sadar circle Sarwar Hossain said quoting locals.

“He might have been killed because he was acting in support of AL candidate Kujendra Lal Tripura in the general election,” he added.

Joint force including the army went to Bidya Mohon Karbary area to recover his body and sent it to the Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital around 11am yesterday.

UPDF Press Secretary Riko Chakma denied their involvement with the killing of Nobo Ranjan.

Paromita Bala Tripura, wife of the deceased, filed a case with the Panchhari police station accusing 11 unidentified criminals. She sought justice and security for her four children.
