A tribunal in Rajshahi yesterday convicted nine people and sentenced them to life imprisonment for killing a man in 2009.
The convicts are Kashem Ali, Khadem Ali, Azam, Mintu, Lal Chan, Tuel alias Rezaul, Abdul Latif, Toufiq and Badal. Of them, Mintu was tried in absentia. All of the convicts are the residents of Rasulpur village under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj.
The court also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in prison.
According to the prosecution, Mafiz Uddin, a trader of Rasulpur village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district, was hacked to death by the convicts following an enmity over the ownership of a mango grove on June 16, 2009, reports BSS. Kashem, Khadem and Azam were nephews of the victim.
A case had been filed with Shibganj Police Station accusing 11 people in this connection.
Police submitted the charge sheet against four people. Following the complaint of the plaintiff, the case was shifted to the Criminal Investigation Department and sent to the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal.
After examining records and witnesses, Judge Shamsul Alam Khan of the tribunal pronounced the verdict acquitting two other accused as allegation brought against them was not proved.
