Legal notice seeks cancellation of ACC act amendment

A legal notice was served yesterday seeking annulment of the recently passed Anti-Corruption (Amendment) Act 2013 that made seeking government approval mandatory for the ACC and criminal courts to move legally against public servants.

Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond sent the notice to the Speaker of parliament, law secretary, cabinet secretary, secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office and the ACC chairman.

He said if the amendment was not scrapped within 24 hours, he would move the High Court by lodging a writ petition.

On November 10, parliament amended the ACC act incorporating the controversial provision.

The original the act of 2004, passed by the then BNP-led government, authorised the graft busters to try criminal charges.
