The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking why the government decision that gave a WiMax licence to Bangladesh Internet Exchange Limited (BIEL) for its Ollo brand should not be declared illegal. The post and telecommunication secretary and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman have to respond to the rule within two weeks.
The bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Khurshid Alam Sarker passed the order after hearing both the sides over a writ petition lodged last week by Omar Farouq, a lawyer.
Aneek R Haque, pleaded for the petitioner saying the licence was given without any competitive auction flouting related laws as well as guidelines, and that the procedure was not transparent.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam argued for the BTRC while Additional Attorney General Murad Reza contended for post and telecommunication ministry.
