Police raid angers singer Nancy

Popular singer Nazmun Munira Nancy has strongly criticised a police raid, which was carried out at her Netrokona house on Tuesday night.

The incident took place only a few days after the National Film Award winning singer posted a Facebook status expressing support for opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s polls-time formula and criticising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to media reports.

Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club on Thursday, Nancy said: “I had just expressed my opinion as I think I have the right to say what my likes and dislikes are. I am just a singer, but after updating my facebook status I became someone who harboured Jamaat-Shibir leaders!”

Saying she was feeling insecure after receiving abusive comments on different social networking sites, Nancy also claimed she received threatening mobile phone messages from many people.

The singer said she was traumatised about the situation and was afraid that her reputation would be damaged.

Clarifying her political stand, she said: “I have never been active in politics. But I give my full support for the nationalistic ideology in our politics.”

Earlier on October 21, Nancy posted a Facebook status welcoming Khaleda Zia’s polls-time formula and appreciating the BNP chairperson’s lenient behaviour. In the same status, the singer criticised the PM for exploiting her powers and claimed that Bangladeshi citizens wanted to be free from the lies of AL.
