10 garment factories announced closed in Gazipur

Authorities of at least 10 garment factories on Tuesday announced their factory closed due to labour unrest in Kaliakair, Gazipur, where workers of those factories observed a strike and protested for a wage hike.

Workers of some of the factories in the Chandra Palli Biddut area, Kaliakair, started protests and observed a strike inside the factory in the morning, demanding a minimum wage of Tk8,000, Assistant Police Super Samsur Rahman of Gazipur industrial police told the Dhaka Tribune.

Later after this news spread, workers of other factories such as Inter Stop, Tropical, Ahsan Composite, Equ Tex, Appex Holdings Limited, Far East, and Devine joined the protest and strike.

The agitated workers also vandalised the factories, and at one stage they tried to block the nearby Dhaka-Tangail highway.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by using water canon. Authorities of the most of the factories announced closure of the factory for the day reportedly avoid any further deterioration of the situation.

Additional police were deployed in the area.
