RMG workers go on rampage demanding Eid bonus and salary

Readymade Garment workers went on rampage and demonstrated in Ashulia and Gazipur industrial area on Thursday, demanding their eid bonus and salary.

The workers vandalised vehicles and different factories of the area and locked into clashes with the law enforcers that left at least 30 people injured.

In Ashulia, workers of the Liberty Fashion Wears Limited area started demonstration, blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway, demanding their eid bonus and salary.

On information, industrial police rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the agitated workers off the highway that triggered a clash between the workers and the police.

During the long half an hour clash, the police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells that left at least 30 people injured.

Abdus Sattar, inspector of Industrial Police 1, told the Dhaka Tribune that the workers took to the street as the factory was closed with a sudden notice without paying the salary and eid bonus of the workers.

However, the workers left the place after the factory authorities assured of paying the dues on October 13.

Meanwhile, the workers of Anzir Apparels, Jaman Garment of Gouripur area, Harvard Sweater, Asha Creation and Ocean and Design of Jamgora area also demonstrated with the same demand.

The situation came under control after the police charged batons at the agitated workers.

Contacted, Mostafizur Rahman, director of industrial police of Ashulia, told the Dhaka Tribune that workers of some RMG factories demonstrated after getting sudden closure notice without getting their bonus and salary.

Additional law enforcers were deployed on the area to avoid any unwanted situation and the factory authorities were asked to settle down the issues, he added.

Elsewhere at the Tongi Sataish area, workers of the Viela Textile demonstrated, demanding their eid vacation be increased to 10 days from the existing seven-day vacation. The workers also demanded the general manager of the factory be sacked as he misbehaved with the workers of the factory.

Later, the factory authorities granted the workers’ demand to solve the unrest.

On the other hand, the workers of Shahreen factory at Barabari area started demonstrating around 8:30am when they found their factory shut without any prior notice. They were supposed to get their salary and other dues on Thursday.

On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control assured the workers that their demand would be met soon.
