Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday lodged a case against Hefazate Islam Nayeb-e-Ameer Mufti Izharul Islam after he allegedly turned down the commission’s repeated queries about his wealth statement.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) sent letter to Izharul on August 4, 11 and 28, but he did not give any answer, said Sirazul Islam, deputy assistant director of the commission, Chittagong 1.
The official said he filed the case with Khulshi police station around 4:30pm, accusing Mufti, principal of Jameatul Islamia Madrassa in the port city’s Lalkhan Bazar area. The Hefazat leader was also the president of Nezame Islam Party, ACC sources said.
ACC official Sirazul Islam, also the plaintiff, told the Dhaka Tribune the ACC first sent a letter to Mufti Izhar asking about his wealth statement on August 4, 2013, but he did not receive the letter and sent it back to the commission.
As he did not submit his wealth statement to the ACC even after asking him thrice for it, it was a clear violation of Anti-Corruption Act 2004.
That was why, the ACC lodged the case against him, added the ACC official.
However, denying the allegation, the Hefazat leader told the Dhaka Tribune the ACC lodged the case to harass him politically.
“I have submitted my wealth statement to the ACC,” claimed Mufti Izhar.
“Except some land in my village at Banskhali upazila, I have nothing,” added the Hefazat leader.
