A Dhaka court on Sunday recorded the deposition of Bishwajit’s father Ananta Chandra Das in the case filed in connection with his son’s murder.
ABM Nizamul Haque, judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal 4, recorded the deposition and set Tuesday for further witness deposition.
During his submission, Ananta, burst into tears, demanding justice for his son’s killing. He also said he was very worried about the security of his other son.
The accused, who have earlier been arrested, were present in the dock during the deposition and they apologised to him.
Defence counsel Md Jamal Uddin Khandokar declined to cross- examine the witness.
The court later granted him a recall petition, by which he has sought to re-examine Earfun Ullah, the magistrate who had recorded the confessional statements given by the accused.
On September 1, Dhaka metropolitan Magistrate Earfun Ullah gave deposition before the tribunal in which he had said the accused had confessed the killing.
So far, the tribunal has recorded the testimonies of 30 out of the 60 prosecution witnesses including Biswajit’s father Ananta.
On March 5, Detective Branch Inspector Tajul Islam pressed charges with the court against 21 leaders and activists of Chhatra League, the student front of ruling Awami League.
24-year-old Bishwajit Das, a tailor by profession whose shop was in Shankhari Bazar area in the capital, was allegedly hacked to death by Chhatra League activists of the Jagannath University on December 9 last year during a road-blockade programme enforced by the opposition.
Eight of them – Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, AHM Kibria, Quiyum Miah Tipu, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon, Saiful Islam, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam alias Shakil, Emdadul Haque Emdad and Golam Mostafa – are now in jail. The remaining 13 accused are absconding.
