The Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to launch a fresh investigation into the wealth of Awami League lawmaker Golam Maula Rony.
The decision came at a regular meeting of the commission on Tuesday. Earlier on July 30, ACC Assistant Director M Talebur Rahman submitted a preliminary report on a year-long probe into the wealth and assets of the lawmaker from Patuakhali 3.
On August 30 last year, the ACC probe team questioned Rony on charges of his alleged connection with the construction of a house on government land, receiving commissions from government tenders, and accumulating wealth through other illegal means.
Talebur Rahman investigated the allegations of Rony’s undisclosed income and collection of money through illegal ways.
The ACC last year asked the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission to provide details on the BO accounts of Rony and his wife to scrutinise their investment in the stock market.
On August 13, the SEC served a letter to the managing directors of the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh and the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited, the CEOs of Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges, and the president of the Merchant Bankers Association for providing information about Rony’s investment in shares, debentures, mutual funds, bonds and other securities.
Inquiry against the Awami League lawmaker was initiated by Deputy Director Ahsan Ali of the Patuakhali office of the commission. Later, the case was handed over to Talebur Rahman.
