The case filed over the killing of Jahangirnagar University student Zubair Ahmed has been shifted to a Speedy Trial Tribunal.
Public prosecutor SM Rafiqul Islam of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 said Judge ABM Nizamul Haq would fix a hearing date today, reports bdnews24.com.
The Speedy Trial Act stipulates wrapping up a case within 135 working days. However, the judge can extend the time with valid reasons.
The same tribunal is trying the sensational Bishwajit Das murder case.
On July 4, the court of Dhaka’s First Additional District and Sessions’ Judge held a hearing on charge framing, but did not indict any. Zubair, a 37th batch student at the Department of English, was brutally tortured on the campus on January 8 last year. He later died the next morning at a Dhaka hospital.
All the 13 accused are activists of ruling Awami League’s student
front , Bangladesh Chhatra League , at the university. They are currently on bail. Zubair was also involved with a faction of Chhatra League, but had quit politics and left the campus a year before his death. The public prosecutor said they would file a plea for producing the accused in the court. “The trial will start with the charge framing.”
