British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Gibson assured Bangladesh on Sunday of UK's constant support in improving workplace environment and safety, reports UNB.
The assurance came from a meeting with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury at her office.
The British envoy said the importance of the readymade garment industry in the development of Bangladesh is huge, and put emphasis on improvements in work environment and workers' safety as well as fire safety, according to a media release.
Welcoming the envoy, the speaker said the role of the RMG sector is very important in empowering women and ensuring rights of workers.
“The government has taken steps for the development of the RMG sector, especially to bring back the buyers into confidence,” she said.
The Speaker also said the government has taken steps in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention.
They discussed various bilateral issues during the meeting.
