The 14th deposition taken on Prof Azad Murder Case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday recorded the deposition of Jamil Uddin Mandal, member of Shaghata Union Parishad, Gaibandha, and also a business man, as the 14th witness of Prof Humayun Azad murder case.

The prosecution has so far produced 14 witnesses for cross-examination.

Jamil told the court in his deposition that, he could identify one accused Nur Mohammad.

After recording his deposition the Dhaka fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge AHM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan fixed the next date for rest of prosecution witness, on July 11.

On May 22, the court recorded the deposition of Rafiqul Islam, Secretary of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote in the murder case of Prof Humayun Azad.

Earlier on 25 April the court recorded the depositions of five deponents, they were: Habibullah Siraji, Azad’s son Ananno Azad, Azad’s brother Md Sazzad Kabir, photojournalist Iftekhar Uddin Ahmed Pavel, and rickshaw puller Saifur Rahman.

Police produced four of the five accused in the case before the court on Tuesday.

On the evening of February 27, 2004, Prof Azad was returning home on foot from the Ekushey Book Fair, when he was stabbed by a group of terrorists on the footpath opposite to the Bangla Academy premises and adjacent to the Suhrawardy Uddyan.

He somewhat recovered from the trauma of the attack and was living in Munich, where he was eventually  discovered dead on August 12, 2004.

An autopsy report said that, he died of cardiac arrest.

Mohammad Lutfor Rahman, the inspector of the criminal investigation department of police, submitted two charge sheets to a Dhaka court claiming that, the terrorist attack had ultimately caused his death.

On September 10, 2012, more than eight years after the attack and death, charges were framed against five JMB (Jammat -ul- Mujahidden Bangladesh) men including: Mohammad Mizanur Rahman Minhaz (aliases: Shafique, Shaon, Hamayim, Hashim), Anwarul Alam (alias Bhagne Shahid), Nur Mohammad Shamim (alias: J M Mobin), Salehin (aliases: Salahuddin, Sajib, Tawhid), and Hafez Mahmud (aliases: Rakib, Rasel).

Among the accused, Nur Mohammad is on the run.
