The High Court on Wednesday ordered the chief inspector of factories and the BGMEA to submit the list of victims of the Tazreen fire who have been awarded compensation, by July 18. The court asked them to submit an up-to-date report on compensation payments.
Delwar Hossain, owner of Tazreen Fashion, also appeared before the court on Wednesday.
Investigation by a government probe committee found the owner of the Tazreen Fashions Ltd factory in Ashulia responsible for the accident, said an official involved in the investigation process.
The fire at Tazreen in Ashulia on November 24 last year killed at least 112 people and injured many others.
The court however did not pass any order against Delwar as the government did not submit the home ministry probe report on the fire.
On June 9, petitioners told the court that 37 garment workers from the Tazreen factory were still listed as missing. Anthropologists Naznin Akter Banu, Saydia Gulrukh Kamal and Mahmudul Hasan Sumon on April 28 filed the petition with the HC along with a list of the names and addresses of the 37 missing people.
The petitioners have sought directives on the government to arrest the owner of the Tazreen garment Delwar Hossain and bring forth legal proceedings against him.
After hearing the petition, the High Court directed the inspector general of police to obtain DNA tests from relatives of the missing people and to submit a report to the court on June 19. The DNA test reports are yet to arrive.
Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy has submitted a prayer request to the court for more time to submit the report.
The probe committee, formed by the home ministry is understood to recommend that Md Delwar Hossain, owner of Tazreen, be tried under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code.
Hossain, the managing director of the garment factory, has denied responsibility for the fire and claimed he was innocent.
The committee also found eight other officials of the garment factory responsible including manager Md Abdur Razzak, Production Manager Md Mobarok Hossain Monju, Quality Manager Md Shahiduzzaman Dulal, Assistant Production Manager Md Sohel Rana, Assistant General Manager Harun Ur Rashid, Security-in-charge Amin and engineer M Mahabubul Morshed.
