Alim killed my grandfather and 25 neighbours: Ajit

A prosecution witness Monday said war crimes suspect Abdul Alim was part of a gang that had killed his grandfather Kanjira Mohanta in Madarganj, Joypurhat during the Liberation War.

“I saw his dead body at Chakpara field,” Ajit Mohanta, the 25th witness told the International Crimes Tribunal-2. He also said Alim, a former BNP lawmaker, was involved in the killing of up to 25 or 26 of his neighbours. After the deposition, the tribunal set Tuesday for cross examination. Defence counsel Ahsanul Haque will cross examine the witness.

“On April 26, 1971 at 11am, I had started for Kadirpur. When I came close to Kadirpur, I heard the sound of firing there. Then I returned to my village and found everybody in the village running here and there. Mother told me to hide with my younger sister Minoti. She said the Pakistani army had attacked and we should go to a safe place. We hid behind a tree near a pond,” the witness told the tribunal. He said he heard gunshots and saw his neighbours being killed when he looked out from behind the tree.

“Later Abdur Rahman, a man from Chakpara village, told us Alim was the leader responsible for the killings...”l
