Prosecution’s last witness, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case against war crimes suspect Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, began deposition about the probe process, Sunday.
IO Nurul Islam gave his deposition before the three-judge panel headed by ATM Fazle Kabir at the International Crimes Tribunal 1.
He will place the evidence and documents that were submitted to the tribunal, and describe how he organised the work. Sunday, the IO told the tribunal about his investigation in Chittagong. He will continue his deposition Monday.
The IO heard 37 witnesses give their deposition against Salauddin Quader.
Sunday, the prosecution submitted a plea to the tribunal to accept statements of eight witnesses that had been made before the IO during the investigation. Three of the eight have already died. The tribunal said it would give an order in this regard later.
The accused, son of the then Muslim League leader Fazlul Quader Chowdhury and presently a senior BNP leader, was particularly accused of masterminding the 1971 killing of Nutan Chandra Singha, a reputed philanthropist and industrialist in the port city of Chittagong and he is said to have instigated the Pakistani army to kill Singha, when they were in favour of sparing him.
He was arrested on December 16, 2010 and he was accused of war crimes committed in 1971, on December 19. He was produced before the tribunal on December 30.
The prosecution pressed 24 specific charges against him on November 14, 2011.
On November 17 of the same year, the tribunal set up to try crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, took 23 charges into cognizance, against the six-time Chittagong MP.
