Security beefed up at city RMG units

The law enforcing agencies have stepped up security measures in parts of the city which have a concentration of apparel units in fear of labour protest.

Huge contingent of police took position in city’s Shyamoli, Mirpur-1 and Mirpur-10 areas from the morning.

Police forces with water cannon are seen patrolling in Mirpur-14 area where an apparel unit remained closed after workers burst into protest demanding wage hike on Monday.

Workers of the garment factory alleged that the authority has hiked wages of only 12 to 13 workers out of 2, 700 employees of the factory.

A worker of the factory Anwar Hossain told banglanews, “We don’t know the reason behind the discrimination but our wages have to be increased.”

Kafrul police station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Wajed Ali said, “Security measures have been beefed up so that nobody can create anarchic situation in the name of demonstration. We are prepared to maintain law and order.”
