Archers Heera Moni and Bonna Akter won the gold and silver medals respectively for Bangladesh at the 1st Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) International Archery Championship, held at the Moulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium in January 2017.

Dhaka TribuneCommenting on their success in sports, human rights activist Khushi Kabir said: “The girls in our country have keenness, and motivation. These archers are the pride of our nation. The country where we belong, where women could not even step out the door, now women are in the field making their names in football, cricket and other sports like archery.”
“We expect even more athletes in our society. We need more playgrounds for women in educational institutions,” Khushi Kabir added.
Heera Moni said: “After seven years I received this success. It was a long journey, but at last I received the gold medal.”
Bonna said: “Every body should have an interest in sports.”
Every February, One Billion Rising holds a programme to convey messages of solidarity against the exploitation of women. The event was held at the Rabindra Shorobor in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Khushi Kabir said : “1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. We should maintain solidarity to fight against such violence.”
The programme included a dance presented by Actionaid Bangladesh, music by Labik Kamal Gaurob, Armeen Musa, and the band Shohojia as well as performances from Mime artist Nithor Mahbub and his team.
