Natural remedies for bad breath

Q: My boyfriend has bad breath. It is really affecting our relationship. Can you help?                                                                                           Sharmin, Mohhamdpur, Dhaka

A:  Bad breath or halitosis is not only embarrassing socially; it is a sign that your body is not running well, health wise. A little attentive work is required to find the cause and treatment.

Look at the diet

Certain foods are best avoided before important meetings, a stel date, or when working closely with others. Foods high on creamy cheeses, garlic, deli meats, and coffee should be halted. Some foods act as short-term remedies by freshening breath - he should try chewing on dried seeds or, if he likes spice, he could nibble on a dried clove.

Oral hygiene

Gingivitis (gum disease) is a common cause of bad breath. The bacteria behind the gingivitis release odiferous gases. A tooth abscess can smell even worse. Both conditions need to be treated by a dentist and/or a periodontist. Keep flossing, brush regularly and avoid sugar. Additionally, vitamin C helps to strengthen gum tissue.

Sinus condition

Mucus dripping down the back of the throat is called post-nasal drip, and is another cause of bad breath. Post-nasal drip is often the result of infected or inflamed sinuses. Treat the sinuses, treat the drip and get rid of bad breath. A saline nasal rinse is good for reducing mucus build-up in nasal passages and sinuses.

Digestion problem

Poor digestion and constipation can also be culprits. If you bloat after eating, chew more thoroughly and take a digestive enzyme with each meal. Avoid taking water during meal. Drink water after 15 minutes of the completion meal. If constipation is a problem, drink sufficient fluids, eat plenty of fibre-rich foods and exercise regularly. Another digestive cause of bad breath may be dysbiosis, where the microflora population is in disarray. Probiotics like yougurt may help.

Along with natural remedies, he has to consult with Dentist, ENT specialist and Gastroenterologist.
