Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University has announced a Tk166.35 crore budget for fiscal year 2014-15.
The budget was announced at the institution's 54th syndicate meeting held in the capital yesterday. BSMMU Treasurer Mohammad Julfiker Rahman Khan announced at the meeting which was presided over by Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Pran Gopal Datta. The syndicate has also approved the proposal for raising the age limit of job for officials and employees from 59 years to 60.
BSMMU Registrar Professor Dr Sayedur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune the syndicate members had unanimously decided to raise the age limit.
A total of 13 people, including a director, were said to be ready to go on retirement yesterday. All of them had almost completed necessary retirement procedures but came to know that they would have the opportunity to continue for another year.
“It was indeed a great news for me when I learnt that I would be able to stay for one more year. I was thinking what I will do and how I will pass my time after my retirement,” an official told the Dhaka Tribune in his instant reaction to the new rule.
The syndicate has approved reappointment of a few staff working on a contractual basis.
Of the Tk166.35 crore budget, Tk116 crore will be spent on hospital affairs and the remaining Tk50.35 crore for the university. Tk55 crore will be spent for teachers, Tk56,25,33,000 for wage and allowances of the staff, Tk6.53 crore for pension grants, Tk20.22 crores for general and others, Tk6.90 crore for education purposes, Tk10.75 crore for capital grants, and Tk10,69,67,000 for repair and maintenance purposes. The institution's last year budget allocation was Tk163.70 crore.
Professor Dr Md Shahidullah Sikder, pro-vice chancellor, Bangladesh Medical Association President Professor Dr Mahmood Hasan, Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons President Professor Dr SMM Golam Kibria attended yesterday's meeting among others.
