Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said doctors across Bangladesh are continuing to provide services day and night despite various limitations.
He made the comments while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion held on Wednesday after inaugurating the upward expansion of the National Institute of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and its upgradation to a 250-bed facility in Tejgaon, Dhaka.
The health minister said various initiatives are being taken to enhance the skills of doctors and provide them with opportunities to gain international experience.
He said efforts are underway to expand opportunities for higher training and fellowships for doctors through cooperation with China, Pakistan and various international organizations.
The minister also urged the media and journalists to understand the realities and challenges faced by doctors in carrying out their duties.
He advised health service providers to maintain a positive attitude towards addressing any shortcomings or mistakes through constructive discussions in the media.
Sakhawat Husain said it is impossible to build a prosperous economy without a healthy and strong population.
“Therefore, everyone involved must be more sincere in ensuring healthcare for people in remote and marginalized communities while upholding the dignity of the medical profession,” he said.
Director of the National Institute of Ear, Nose and Throat Professor Dr Hasan Zafar presided over the discussion.
Dr Zahirul Islam Shakil, secretary general of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), Professor Dr AKM Azizul Haque, chairman of Bangladesh Shishu Hospital, and DAB President Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid also spoke at the event.
