Measles outbreak: Death toll reaches 885 as five die in 24 hours

Five more children have died from measles and measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours leading up to 8:00am on Wednesday, raising the overall death toll from the ongoing outbreak to 885.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has classified four of the latest casualties as suspected, while one has been clinically confirmed.

With the latest figures, the total number of suspected measles deaths has reached 786, while the number of confirmed deaths rose to 99.

Among the latest suspected fatalities, Sylhet division recorded the highest count with two deaths. At the district level, one suspected casualty each was reported in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Dhaka, and Barisal.

A total of 941 suspected measles cases were recorded in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning, taking the overall suspected case tally to 139,125.

During the same period, 84 new confirmed measles cases were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 17,469.

Since March 15, 2026, a total of 121,013 suspected measles patients have been hospitalized across the country, of whom 116,827 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, according to the DGHS.
