Measles outbreak: Death toll reaches 610 as five children die in 24 hours

Five more children died from measles-related complications in the 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Thursday, raising the cumulative death toll from the ongoing outbreak to 610, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The total number of suspected measles-related deaths since March 15 reached 519. No new confirmed deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, leaving the cumulative number of confirmed measles deaths at 91.

Dhaka Division and Dhaka district reported the highest number of measles-related deaths, the bulletin said.

During the same period, 1,168 new suspected measles cases were reported across the country, bringing the total number of suspected cases since March 15 to 76,876.

The DGHS also reported 243 new confirmed measles cases in the last 24 hours, raising the cumulative number of confirmed infections to 9,503.

Since the outbreak began, a total of 62,287 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals, while 58,154 have been discharged after treatment.

The data were compiled by the Health Emergency Operations Center and Control Room of the DGHS.

Bangladesh has been grappling with a widespread measles outbreak since mid-March, with health authorities continuing surveillance, treatment, and immunization efforts to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.
