Two infants have died in Sylhet with measles-like symptoms. The victims—aged six months and five months—died separately at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Monday.
The deceased were six-month-old Omar, son of Abdul Afiq from Saratish village in Bishwanath upazila of Sylhet, and five-month-old Priyam Sarkar, son of Tutul Sarkar from Bharatpur village in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj. Both were undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Confirming the matter, officials from the Sylhet divisional office of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said that since the beginning of the year, three children have died of confirmed measles in the division, while 15 others have died with measles-like symptoms, bringing the total death toll to 18.
In the 24 hours until 6am Tuesday, 63 new patients with measles or similar symptoms were admitted to hospitals across the division, while one case of measles was confirmed.
Currently, around 200 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals in Sylhet with measles or measles-like symptoms.
Of them, 83 are admitted to Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, 10 to Osmani Medical College Hospital, six to Sylhet Women’s Medical Hospital, one each to Mother and Child Hospital and Al Haramain Hospital, seven to Ragib Rabeya Medical College Hospital, two each to Mount Adora Hospital, North East Medical College Hospital and Parkview Medical College Hospital, four to Bahubal Upazila Health Complex in Habiganj, two to Dirai Upazila Health Complex in Sunamganj, one to Shantiganj Upazila Health Complex, 46 to Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital, three to Jagannathpur Upazila Health Complex, 15 to Habiganj District Sadar Hospital and 15 to Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital.
