Experts discuss multidisciplinary approach to obesity, metabolic care

Evercare Hospital Dhaka organized a scientific discussion titled “Comprehensive Approach to Metabolic Surgery” at its auditorium, bringing together endocrinologists, surgeons, and healthcare professionals to exchange insights on advanced metabolic and bariatric care.

The session focused on the growing need for multidisciplinary strategies to address obesity and metabolic disorders in Bangladesh, according to organizers.

The program opened with a welcome address by Dr Arif Mahmud, group medical director of Evercare Hospitals Bangladesh, who highlighted the importance of coordinated clinical approaches in managing complex metabolic conditions.

A scientific presentation was delivered by the Bangladesh Endocrine Society (BES), led by Dr Afsar Ahammed, associate professor (OSD, DGHS) and PhD researcher at the Department of Endocrinology, BMU, who also serves as organizing secretary and member secretary of the BES Obesity Taskforce.

This was followed by a presentation from the bariatric surgery team at Evercare Hospital Dhaka, led by Prof (Dr) SM Abu Zafar and Dr Mohammad Farid Hossein, both senior consultants in general and laparoscopic surgery. The presentation addressed evidence-based practices, patient selection criteria, surgical advancements, and long-term metabolic outcomes.

The session was moderated by Dr Ahsanul Haq Amin, senior consultant in the Diabetology and Endocrinology Department at Evercare Hospital Dhaka, facilitating discussion between speakers and participants.

Prof Faruq Pathan, director (Academy) at BIRDEM and chief patron of the Bangladesh Endocrine Society, attended as chief guest, while Dr Faria Afsana, associate professor and head of the Endocrinology Department at BIRDEM and president of BES, presided as chairperson.

A panel discussion followed, featuring contributions from Prof Muhammad Hafizur Rahman of Continental Hospital, Dr Shahjada Selim of BMU, Prof Dr Abdul Mannan Sarker of Evercare Hospital Dhaka, and Dr M Saifuddin of DMCH. Panelists addressed audience questions and shared clinical perspectives on metabolic and bariatric care.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Tahniyah Haq, associate professor at BMU and scientific secretary and convenor of the BES Obesity Taskforce, who acknowledged the participation of speakers and attendees.

According to organizers, the discussion emphasized the adoption of comprehensive, evidence-based approaches to metabolic surgery to improve patient outcomes and strengthen standards of care in Bangladesh.
