Decision taken to perform emergency brain surgery on Mirza Abbas at Evercare Hospital

A medical board has decided to perform emergency brain surgery on Mirza Abbas, a standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital.

BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr Rafiqul Islam disclosed the matter on Friday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters, Rafiqul Islam said a board of specialist physicians reviewed Abbas’s condition and determined that brain surgery was necessary. “A short while ago, at 3:10 pm, he was taken to the operating theatre,” he said.

According to him, a CT scan conducted on Friday morning revealed a deterioration in Abbas’s condition. After reviewing the report, the medical board held a virtual meeting and unanimously decided to proceed with emergency surgery. Consent from Abbas’s family members was obtained before the procedure began.

The medical board overseeing his treatment includes Dr Aliuzzaman Joardar, Prof Dr Quazi Deen Mohammadad, Prof Shahabuddin Talukdar, Prof Raziul Haque, Prof Saeed Ahmed, Prof Kader Sheikh and Prof Shafiqul Islam, along with other physicians from Evercare Hospital.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Evercare Hospital to inquire about Abbas’s condition. During the visit, members of the medical board briefed him on the patient’s health status.

BNP had previously announced that Abbas would be flown to Singapore at 6:00 pm on Friday for advanced medical treatment. However, the decision to conduct emergency surgery was taken before the transfer could take place.
