Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen has directed hospitals nationwide to ensure a sufficient number of vacant beds to address situations like the ongoing heatwave.
He made this announcement during a meeting with hospital directors and civil surgeons held on Sunday morning.
Speaking at a briefing in the ministry's meeting room later that afternoon, Dr Samanta Lal Sen said: "This morning, I convened a meeting with all hospital directors across the country. I issued several directives, including raising awareness through the media. It's crucial for the elderly and children to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities."
"Additionally, I've instructed hospitals to keep beds unoccupied. We've agreed to admit only urgent cases for now. Patients requiring non-urgent procedures, scheduled for a month later, or those whose conditions permit delaying admission should be deferred. However, if the situation escalates, provisions will be made to admit children and elderly patients. We anticipate no shortage of oral rehydration solution. As of now, we've managed the situation effectively, but nature is unpredictable," he added.
Responding to inquiries, the health minister mentioned: "Yesterday, I visited the children's hospital and instructed authorities to make adequate arrangements. Fortunately, no issues have been reported thus far. I've emphasized the importance of keeping a sufficient number of beds available in case of any deterioration in the situation."
