Bagerhat’s Fakirhat upazila on Thursday declared that it has vaccinated 100% of its population against Covid-19.
Among all 494 upazilas in the country, Bagerhat district has become the first to have at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine administered to all of its eligible population, said Lokman Hossain Miah, secretary to the Health Services Division, at a program held at the upazila.
"This is quite an accomplishment. Fakirhat will serve as an example for the other upazilas in the country," he added.
"Everyone above the age of 12 in Fakirhat has been vaccinated. Against an eligible population of 126,000 in the upazila, 120,000 people have been inoculated and 6,000 residents who live outside the upazila also got jabbed – which means we have 100% of our population vaccinated," Fakirhat upazila parishad Chairman Swapan Kumar Das said.
The speakers at the program credited the success to several campaigns, including mega vaccination drives, special camps for senior citizens, door-to-door campaigns, and the engagement of public leaders at all levels.
Professor Meerjady Sabrina Flora, additional director general of the health directorate, said: "We have started administering booster doses to people over 60 years of age and want to fully vaccinate 100% of the target population against Covid-19 by March."
