Covid: 10,906 new cases logged with 31.29% infection rate

The health authorities in Bangladesh reported 10,906 new coronavirus infections in 24 hours till Sunday morning, amid an outbreak of the Omicron variant.

The new infections take the overall caseload to 1,685,136.

As many as 34,854 samples were tested in the period for a test positivity rate of 31.29%.

With 14 new deaths, including six males and four females, the total fatality rose to 28,223 since March 2020.

Of them, five died in Dhaka division alone, two each in Sylhet, Mymensingh, Chittagong divisions and one each in Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal divisions. 

The country reported 9,614  cases and 17 deaths in the 24 hours till 8am on Saturday, when the daily test positivity rate was 28.02%.

Between Saturday and Sunday mornings, a total of 782 patients also recovered and left hospitals across the country, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,556,861.

The recovery rate stands at 92.39% while the death rate remains at 1.67%.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 7,292 cases, the highest among the divisions.

In its daily bulletin on Sunday, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said that the Omicron variant is gradually replacing the Delta variant.

Omicron is in the community transmission phase, according to its spokesperson Prof Nazmul Islam said.

He said 73% of people with Omicron have runny noses, 68% have headaches, 64% have fatigue, 60% have sneezing, 60% have sore throats and 44% have coughs.

Until Thursday, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases was at 64, according to GISAID, a global initiative.

The country reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 5 last year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28.
