Covid: Bangladesh records 241 more deaths, 13,817 new cases

Bangladesh tallied another 241 Covid-19 deaths and 13,817 new cases on Wednesday, as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc in the country.

On the other hand, 16,112 more patients recovered from the infectious disease in the 24 hours between 8am on Tuesday and 8am on Wednesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest additions took the country’s death toll to 21,638, the total caseload to 1,309,910 and the total number of recoveries to 1,141,157.

Dhaka counted 93 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with 68 fatalities.

Thirty-six deaths were reported in Khulna division, 15 in Rangpur, 12 in Rajshahi, seven in Mymensingh, and five each in Barisal and Sylhet.

Two hundred and twenty-two of them died at different hospitals across the country, one was brought in dead, while 18 died at home.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 5,714 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 4,096, Barisal with 773 and Khulna with 745.

As many as 49,514 samples were tested during the 24-hour period, yielding an infection rate of 27.91%.

The infection rate against all tests conducted in the country to date stands at 16.48%.

Meanwhile, the latest figures put the recovery rate at 87.12% and the mortality rate at 1.65 %.

Vaccination progress

So far, around 4.31 million people have received the second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, while about 1.5 million have only received the first dose and are awaiting the second one.

Moreover, 216,534 people received their first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 2,900,846, while another 10,931 people received their second jab of the Chinese vaccine.

Additionally, another 1,026 people received their second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, taking the count to 4,194. As many as 50,255 people have been administered the first dose of the vaccine.

Besides, 82,054 more people received the first dose of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine, taking the total to 926,263.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus later named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.26 million lives and infected over 200.4 million people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

More than 180.6 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 222 countries and territories across the planet.
