Covid-19: Nearly half of the deaths reported in last 6 months

The first half of 2021 was the worst period of Covid-19 in Bangladesh in terms of deaths, with April being the most fatal.

Between January 1 and June 30 this year, 6,944 people died due to the pandemic across the country, according to the health directorate. 

With the death toll standing at 14,646 as of July 1, more than 47% of the fatalities the country witnessed happened in the last six months of the pandemic. 

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in 2021, 568 people died due to Covid-19 in January, 281 in February, 638 in March, 2,404 in April, 1,169 in May, and 1,884 in June.

On July 1, the DGHS reported 143 deaths in 24 hours, the highest ever single-day death tally reported in the country since the pandemic broke out last year. 

Of the deceased, 10,415 were men, and 4,231 were women. 

Dhaka is still the worst-hit division in the country, reporting 7,614 deaths since March 2020, while Chittagong has reported 2,765, Rajshahi 1,053, Khulna 1,311, Barisal 431, Sylhet 534, Rangpur 618, and Mymensingh 320, as of July 1. 

The DGHS also reported 8,301 fresh cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours to 8am Thursday, which raised the nationwide caseload to 921,559. 

The mortality rate due to Covid-19 stands at 1.59%.
