Covid-19: 14 more die in 24 hours at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital

Fourteen more patients have died in the last 24 hours to Friday morning at the Covid-19 unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). 

Of them, five had tested positive for the pandemic disease, while the rest had only exhibited symptoms, RMCH Director Brig Gen Shamim Yazdani confirmed on Friday. 

Two of the patients died while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Of the deceased, who died between 8am Thursday and 8am Friday, six were from Rajshahi district, four from Chapainawabganj, one from Natore and three from Naogaon. Four of them were aged above 61 years, 5 between 50-60, four between 41-50, and 1 between 31-40 years. 

With the latest count, the Covid death toll at the RMCH in the last 25 days stands at 274, of which 127 patients were from Rajshahi and 97 from Chapainawabganj.

The highest single-day death toll recorded at the RMCH this month was on Thursday - 18 - and the lowest on June 12 - four.

RMCH Director Brig Gen Shamim Yazdani further said 65 new patients were admitted at the hospital’s Covid-19 unit, while 43 were released after making full recovery in the last 24 hours.  

As of 8am Friday, 423 patients are being treated at the hospital, which has 357-bed capacity for Covid-19 patients. 

The infection rate over the last 24 hours was recorded at 29.75% - 160 samples came out positive out of 560 tested at RMCH. 

The single-date test positivity rate dropped under 30% after five days, thanks to the three-week lockdown currently in progress in the district. 

The ongoing lockdown was first enforced for a week in the Rajshahi city corporation area on June 11, aiming to stem the rapidly rising Covid-19 cases. The lockdown was extended for another week on June 16, then once again for a third week on Wednesday. 

The overall situation in the division

A total of 871 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in all eight districts of Rajshahi division on Thursday, raising the number of infections to 51,555, reports BSS.

The death toll has reached 800, including 366 in Bogra and 143 in Rajshahi with 82 in its city, said Dr Habibul Ahsan Talukder, divisional director of health.

The new daily infection figure shows a significant declining trend compared to the previous day's figure of 1,018, said the health directorate sources.

Among the infected people, 36,994 have made recovery from the lethal viral infection so far, with 316 new recoveries found on Thursday.

A total of 5,308 infected patients are now undergoing treatment at different designated hospitals here.

Of the total new positive cases, the highest 299 were detected in Rajshahi, 229 of which were in Rajshahi city, followed by 125 in Naogaon, 124 in Bogura, 78 in Natore, 76 in Pabna, 63 in Chapainawabganj, 61 in Joypurhat and 45 in Sirajganj districts.

With the new detected patients, the district-wise break-up of the total cases now stands at 15,831 in Rajshahi, including 12,831 in its city, 3,900 in Chapainawabganj, 4,116 in Naogaon, 3,171 in Natore, 3,115 in Joypurhat, 13,276 in Bogura, 4,184 in Sirajganj and 3,962 in Pabna.

The surge of Covid-19 cases has been on a steady rise in all eight districts of the division since the very beginning of the second wave, making the division a hotspot of the deadly virus.
