More than half of the people who have died of Covid-19 in Bangladesh are over 60 years old, according to the daily virus update released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday.
A total of 5,385 people over 60 have died of Covid-19, which makes up 56.19% of the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the country.
On Friday, 36 out of the 63 newly reported Covid-19 deaths were of people over the age of 60.
As many as 46 people out of the 76 people who died from Covid-19 on Thursday were over 60 years old, on Wednesday 40 out of 63, on Tuesday 41 out of 66, on Monday 32 out of 52, on Sunday 34 out of 53, and on Saturday 34 out of 53.
A total of 9,584 people have died from Covid-19 in the country, so far, including 7,173 men (74.84%) and 2,411 women (25.16%).
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “Older adults are at greater risk of requiring hospitalization or dying if they are diagnosed with COVID-19. As you get older, your risk of being hospitalized for COVID-19 increases.”
Statistics also show that older people are more likely to die and need hospitalization if they contract the virus.
CDC data shows that the death rate of people aged 30-39 is 45 times higher than people that of people aged 5-17, and the death rate for people aged over 85 is 8,700 times higher than people aged 5-17.
The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed more than 2,917,995 lives and infected at least 134,641,198 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to data aggregating website Worldometer.
As many as 108,415,236 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
