Chittagong sees alarming rise in Covid-19 cases

Chittagong has been witnessing a rise in the number of coronavirus infections for the last few weeks.

According to data provided by the Chittagong Civil Surgeon’s Office, Chittagong has so far logged a total of 24,382 Covid-19 cases.

Of them, 18,286 patients hail from the metropolitan area while the remaining 6,096 patients are from different upazilas of the district.

As of November 26, as many as 318 people have succumbed to the deadly viral infection.

So far, 21,083 people have recovered from the disease. Of them, 3,477 recovered while undergoing treatment at different hospitals and 17,606 recovered in home isolation.

Public health specialists fear that the spike in the number of infections is a prelude to the second wave of the pandemic.

Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi has warned people of a possible second wave of Covid-19 in winter.

Urging people to abide by health guidelines, particularly wearing masks, the civil surgeon said everyone had to be cautious from now on about the possible second wave.

“Most of the recovered patients have received treatment at home. Therefore, one must consult a doctor immediately after developing symptoms of Covid-19. Besides, people should opt for tests and keep themselves isolated until receiving the test reports,” the civil surgeon said.

According to physicians, the number of infections has risen and, with that, people’s tendency to get themselves tested has increased as well.

At the end of October and the beginning of November, the number of daily infections was below 100 in Chittagong, but the numbers soon saw a rapid increase.
