Covid-19: Bangladesh reports another 1,837 cases, 21 deaths

Bangladesh on Sunday recorded 21 Covid-19 deaths and 1,837 fresh cases overnight.

The recovery count rose to 349,542 after another 1,693 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period, according to a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), reports BSS.

Twenty-one more Covid-19 patients died in the last 24 hours, increasing the death toll from the pandemic to 6,194, the release said.

It said the tally of infections has surged to 432,333 as 1,837 new cases were confirmed.

A total of 14,060 samples were tested at 116 authorized laboratories across the country during the time.

Of the total samples tested in the past 24 hours, 13.07% tested positive, while 17.01% cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the release added.

Of the total infections, 80.85% patients have recovered, while 1.43% died so far since the first Covid-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8.

Out of the 21 new deaths, 17 were men and four women, the press release said, adding that one was in his 40s, two in their 20s, four in their 50s, while 14 were above 60 years.

According to the division-wise data, 14 deaths took place in Dhaka Division and rest were in other divisions.

Among the total 6,194 deaths, 3,248 occurred in Dhaka Division, 1,214 in Chittagong, 378 in Rajshahi, 482 in Khulna, 207 in Barisal, 257 in Sylhet, 278 in Rangpur and 130 in Mymensingh.

A total of 2,541,194 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.

Global Situation

Global coronavirus cases are getting close to 54 million with 1,310,433 deaths since the virus emerged in China late last year, reports UNB.

The number of globally confirmed coronavirus cases reached 53,852,537 as of Sunday morning, according to the figures compiled by the Johns Hopkins University.

In terms of the total number of cases and fatalities, the US leads with over 10,891,007 cases and 245,578 deaths.

The second-highest number of cases has been confirmed in India with 8,773,479 followed by Brazil with 5,848,959, France with 1,915,713, Russia with 1,887,836, Spain with 1,458, 591 and the UK with 1,347,907 cases.

Brazil's Covid-19 death toll hit 165,658 on Saturday after 921 deaths were reported in 24 hours, according to its Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, the Latin American country registered 38,307 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the national count to 5,848,959.
