A high up police official of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has died of coronavirus.
CMP Deputy Commissioner of Detective Branch, Mizanur Rahman, 47, breathed his last on Monday morning while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital in the capital.
Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital's Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Saiful Islam Shanto confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said: "Mizanur Rahman had been admitted to the hospital since June 28. He died at 3:41am today while undergoing treatment in the ICU of the hospital.”
His Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Rajarbagh Police Lines on Monday morning and he will be buried at Rayerbazar graveyard in Dhaka.
CMP Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman has expressed deep grief over his death.
He had been working from the field level in Chittagong city after the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. He had been directly supervising the law and order situation, implementing lockdown, creating awareness among the people, and distributing food items and relief among the unemployed.
Police Headquarters Assistant Inspector General (Media and PR) Md Sohel Rana said that Mizanur Rahman joined Bangladesh Police in 2003 as an assistant superintendent of police after passing the 22nd BCS.
He was born in 1973 in Shariatpur district to an aristocratic Muslim family. He is survived by his wife, two sons and numerous relatives and admirers, he added.
Bangladesh Police Inspector General (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has expressed deep grief and sorrow at the untimely death of a heroic frontline fighter of the coronavirus prevention force.
According to CMP sources, five of their policemen have died due to Covid-19 so far.
According to the Police Headquarters, 50 policemen across Bangladesh have passed away after contracting Covid-19 till date.
Meanwhile, 12,780 policemen have tested positive for the disease so far. Among them, 2,444 are from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Of the positive cases, 9,190 policemen have made full recovery from Covid-19 and have reported for duty.
