Retired ENT professor dies of Covid-19 in Chittagong

A retired ENT Professor of Chittagong Medical College Hospital has died of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at a government hospital in the city.

The physician Lolit Kumar Dutt, 78, an ENT specialist died while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chittagong General Hospital on Sunday night.

Dr Golam Mostafa Jamal, Resident Medical Officer of Chittagong General Hospital, said that the physician was admitted to the hospital with Covid-19 infection on June 20.

“As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the ICU of the hospital where he died at 11:30 pm on Sunday,” said Dr Jamal, adding Lolit Kumar was the student of second batch of Chittagong Medical College.

On June 17, a doctor died with the Covid-19 symptoms while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chittagong.

The deceased, identified as Dr Nurul Haque, 47, was a senior medical officer of Chittagong Metropolitan Hospital.

On June 14, another doctor died of simillar symptoms while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Maa O Shishu Hospital.

The deceased was identified as Sadequr Rahman, 65, was a sinologist of Jemison Red Crescent Maternity Hospital.

As of Sunday, Chittagong recorded 6288 confirmed cases of the viral disease.

Of the total cases, 68% patients hail from the metropolitan area while 32% are of different upazilas of the district.  

Among the infected, 640 patients returned home after recovery while 141 patients fell victim to the deadly disease.

Currently, as many as 363 patients are undergoing treatment at the isolation units of different hospitals in Chittagong and 606 others are in home quarantine in the district.
