Bangladesh Police has reported the death of another policeman from Covid-19, taking the body count of police personnel dying from Covid-19 to 17.
Although he died on June 1 at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, his coronavirus test report came back positive on Thursday.
The deceased Mamun Uddin, 24, worked as a constable at public order management in Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Additionally, 324 police personnel, including senior officers, have been infected with the coronavirus in the last 24 hours.
Altogether 5,831 people in the law enforcement agency have been infected with Covid-19 so far, according to the police headquarters on Thursday.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Bangladesh, the police have been the worst affected among professionals.
Among the infected, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has the most number of infected members at 1,777.
As many as 2,122 policemen had recovered from the deadly virus till Thursday.
A total of 1,640 police personnel have been admitted to the isolation unit with coronavirus symptoms. There are 5,559 policemen in quarantine since they came in contact with infected persons.
Police headquarters AIG (media) Md Sohel Rana said the deceased Mamun’s village home was in Kalikapur under Parshuram police station in Feni district. He is survived by his father, mother, pregnant wife and one daughter.
Mamun was laid to rest in the family graveyard at his village home in the presence of senior officers of the district police, he added.
AIG Sohel also said that the police department had raised awareness among policemen on government health guidelines and hygiene rules in order to ensure that everyone stayed safe.
Senior officers were also visiting different units and talking to the members of the police force on these issues. The supply and use of safety equipment and adequate disinfectants had been ensured, he added.
The police official said various preventive measures had been taken on the directives of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed. At the same time, adequate medical equipment had been added in all police hospitals, including rented private hospitals, to ensure the best of service for affected policemen.
