Bangladesh has lost another doctor to the Covid-19, the deadly disease caused by a new strain of the coronavirus.
Identified as Dr Maj (retd) Abul Mokarim Md Mohsin Uddin, the doctor passed away while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 11:20pm on Tuesday.
With him, three doctors have so far died, alongside a number of other health workers, from the disease that killed a total 250 people in Bangladesh until Tuesday afternoon.
Dr Mohsin was chief consultant of the radiology department at Ibn Sina Diagnostic and Imaging Centre, said the centre’s Manager (admin) Shafiqul Islam on Wednesday morning.
He was admitted to CMH a week ago after testing Covid-19 positive, said Shafiqul.
According to the deceased’s family, he fell sick some 10-12 days ago and was undergoing treatment at home. He was rushed to the Ibn Sina Specialized Hospital with respiratory issues on May 5.
The next day, Dr Mohsin, who was also a freedom fighter, was referred and moved to CMH, added Shafiqul.
He said the deceased’s wife, elder son, and daughter-in-law later also tested positive for Covid-19.
Shafiqul said Dr Mohsin was not directly involved in treating patients. “He just made the test reports. We locked down his room and later disinfected it.
“However, our operation is continuing as usual.”
Earlier, on April 15, Dr Md Moyeen Uddin, an assistant professor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, died at Dhaka’s Kurmitola General Hospital.
Haematologist Prof Col (retd) Md Moniruzzaman of Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Hospital died on May 3.
Two other doctors have also died with Covid-19 symptoms — one on April 12 and the other on May 11.
Until Wednesday afternoon, health authorities in Bangladesh recorded a total of 17,822 Covid-19 cases and 269 deaths from the disease.
