Bangladesh MP tests positive for Covid-19

A ruling MP of Bangladesh has tested positive for Covid-19, the first known case of a lawmaker in the country to catch the disease.

Md Shahiduzzaman Sarker of Naogon-2 constituency sent his samples for testing on Thursday, which came back positive on Friday, ruling party Whip Atiur Rahman Atik told Dhaka Tribune.

“The 60-year-old has quarantined himself at his NAM flat residence. His condition is stable,” he said before adding Sarker recently returned to Dhaka from his constituency.

Whip Atik, however, said he was not sure whether the building was locked down.

A former whip, Sarker has been elected an MP for several times.

He now serves as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
