Coronavirus: 8 people fined for wandering in Dhaka

A mobile court under the Dhaka district administration has fined eight people for wandering about without reason in the capital amid the ongoing coronavirus-induced government shutdown. 

They were fined Tk2,600 in total for being outside their homes in Dhaka’s Hatirpul Bazar and Ramna areas without any valid reason on Thursday.

This mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Mahnaz Hossain Fariba was assisted by  Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna zone Assistant Commissioner (AC) SM Shamim.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Mahnaz Hossain Fariba said: “The government has declared a general holiday till May 5 to ensure social distancing through avoiding public gatherings. This has been done to fight the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak. 

“However, some people are still defying government directives. Thus today [Thursday], during drives at Dhaka’s Ramna and Hatirpul Bazar areas, we fined eight people Tk2,600 for being outside without any valid reason. We will continue such drives in the future.”

As of Thursday, Bangladesh had confirmed 4,186 coronavirus cases, with the death toll rising to 127 after seven new fatalities were reported.

The fast spreading Covid-19 has so far killed 185,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories.
