Hospital in Ahmedabad splits coronavirus wards based on faith

Coronavirus patients and suspected cases at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital have been segregated into wards depending on their faith.

Medical Superintendent Dr Gunvant H Rathod said separate wards for Hindu and Muslim patients had been created in accordance with state government directive.

“Generally, there are separate wards for male and female patients. But here, we have made separate wards for Hindu and Muslim patients,” he said, reports the Indian Express.

When asked for the reason for such segregation he replied: “It is a decision of the government and you can ask them.”

However, government officials denied having knowledge of any such directive issued by the government.

Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Nitin Patel denied having knowledge on any such decision.

“I am not aware of such a decision (to separate wards based on faith). Generally, there are separate wards for males and females. I will enquire about it,” said the minister.

Ahmedabad Collector K K Nirala also denied having any knowledge on the subject.

“There has been no such instruction from our side and we are not aware of any such government decision,” Nirala said.
