Coronavirus: AL to form relief work committees across country

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged party members to form relief work committees across Bangladesh to ensure food safety and financial aid for those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Sheikh Hasina, also president of Awami League, gave the directives on a video call with her party colleagues from Ganabhaban on Wednesday evening.

Awami League Presidium Member Matia Chowdhury, Health Secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, and Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan joined the call from the party’s Dhanmondi office.

In a press release issued in this regard, Biplab Barua, quoting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said the ruling party has to form ward level relief work committees across the country.

The lists with necessary information concerning these committees will have to be submitted to the district level Awami League offices as soon as possible.

The prime minister called for a work plan for these committees and said they will assist the local administration in relief activities in this time of crisis.

She said these committees formed by the ruling party will make a proper list of the poor, underprivileged, and helpless in their respective areas and then will submit that to the concerned local administration office.

The press release also mentioned that the premier will provide ration cards to the country’s 5,000,000 jobless people which the Awami League relief work committees will assist to prepare.

Sheikh Hasina also urged party members to follow the health directives provided to fight coronavirus and create awareness among the people, added the release.

As of Wednesday, Bangladesh has confirmed 1,231 coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 50 after four new fatalities were reported.

The fast spreading Covid-19 has so far killed 128,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories.
