A six-year-old physically challenged boy in Chittagong has died from coronavirus at Chittagong General Hospital early Monday, making him the youngest to die from the deadly virus in Bangladesh.
Dr Ashim Kumar Nath, Superintendent of Chittagong General Hospital, told Dhaka Tribune that the patient was brought to the hospital in critical condition.
“The patient was brought to the hospital from Patiya upazila in a terminal stage at 2:10 am. He had severe respiratory complications. Later, the patient died at 3:10am,” said Dr Ashim.
Previously on Sunday, the patient was diagnosed with Covid-19 after his samples were tested at Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID).
The UNO and the child's family sources said that as the child was physically challenged and he could not go out of the home. So, they are not sure how the child was infected with the virus.
But one of his relatives came from Oman about a month ago and stayed with the family for one week. Meanwhile, a banker, who is working in Narayanganj district, visited the family twice last week.
The local administration brought the child's house, including some adjacent houses, under lockdown after the child was infected.
So far, a total of 14 persons including a woman have been diagnosed with coronavirus in Chittagong.
Of them, a 69-year old man died from the virus at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on April 9, making it the first death with coronavirus in Chittagong.
On April 3, a 67-year-old man was tested positive, making it the first confirmed case in the port city.
